| no partners | | I wanted to go somewhere a little bit warmer so I departed from the Canyon at 3:30PM (28 degrees) and arrived at Red Butte 35 minutes later to 36 degrees. I was thrilled that the temperature was above freezing. It does something for me mentally to get above 32 degrees for the day. There was a line of cars going into the Park at the entrance station and judging from the number of people in the lobbies and cafeteria the past two days, it has been a very busy weekend for visitation. However, nobody has been out to Red Butte or hiked the trail since the last snowfall on Friday.
I departed from the trailhead at 4:22PM and the thickest snow on the trail was encountered on the north slope saddle area. The snow, combined with areas of moist soil/mud, recuperating from strength training yesterday, and a couple pounds heavier over the past several weeks, led to an ascent time of 31 minutes. Windy/cold on the north side of the tower and snapped some photos towards Humphrey’s. After about ten minutes up top, I headed back down and returned to my vehicle. Already back down to 27 degrees at the car at 5:32PM, 21 degrees at the post office at 6:10PM and 19 degrees seven minutes later here at the office. Definitely the coldest November and December since I have been at the Canyon in four years. I am hoping that January and February will be a little warmer. Photos to be posted later tonight. |
