| no partners | | I had wanted to hike this morning, but it was the Mathers Extended Family Easter Brunch, which I had to attend since I've skipped all family events since November. After a few bottles of champagne and a meal of Kit Kats, I sat around all afternoon, then slammed a bottle of Gatorade, took some ibuprofin, and headed to the trailhead. I wanted to start before 5:00 in order to be home by 8:00 to get my kids in bed. Got started a little before 5:00, immediately decided it was too hot, but headed up anyway. Saw JJ at the trailhead, but didn't see anyone else until I got to the top of Pyramid; at the top there were three guys who looked even more miserable than I felt.
They were in disbelief that I was: A-not tired; B-going to hike another 6-7 miles; C-going to hike in the dark; and D-not scared of snakes or scorpions. They were pretty funny, so I chatted with them for a couple of minutes, then kept going while they turned around and headed back down. Right after that, I saw a little snake that looked and moved kind of like a whipsnake, but I'm not sure if that's what it was. Headed to Goat Hill, then back down.
On my return on Pyramid, I saw a big rattler on the trail about 15 feet ahead of me. I was able to easily move around it and get some pics. Normally, I wait until it's pretty dark before turning on my headlamp, but decided to use it a little earlier tonight. Not more than a minute or so after I turned it on, I nearly stepped on a small rattler. If I hadn't had the light on, I most likely wouldn't have seen it until too late. I took some pics, let it move off the trail, and kept going. A few minutes later...yet another rattler. This one did not like me, and did not want to move off the trail, and there was no safe way around it. I stood there for at least five minutes (felt like forever) while it rattled at me before it finally was far enough off the trail to where I could run past it.
So much for getting done by 8:00. The rest of the way, every branch looked like the snake, and I went much slower than usual, but didn't see anything else. Finished about 8:10, and got home to my kids eating waffles and ice cream sandwiches in the kitchen because their father had fallen asleep before 7:00. That led to me showing them how I used to toast waffles and spread vanilla ice cream on top as a snack when I was younger, which then turned into my dinner tonight. |
