I was taking advantage of the early hour and low(?) temps to get out and hike some of the desert close to Superstition Mountain. The sky has a very heavy haze that's due to the numerous fires that are presently burning around Arizona but, unfortunate as that is, they present lots of colorful sky's at sunrise and sunset.
I hit the trails at 0530 with no other hikers in sight, temps hovering around the 75 degree mark, almost zero wind and the only sounds were the chirping of a few early birds. I hadn't gone very far when the silence was shattered by the barking of a nearby Coyote who was obviously disturbed by my presence.
This Coyote didn't really bark like a dog, instead, it sounds like a dog with a bad case of laryngitis, a very raspy sound. Initially it scared the hell out of me because it was so close and the desert had been so quiet but soon I caught sight of it nervously hiding in the dry Creosote bushes. It kept about a 200 foot distance off to my right but followed me as I walked through the bushes, barking and yipping occasionally.
When I would pause to get its picture, it would get nervous and duck into the nearby bushes and disappear from sight. This continued for a major portion of my hike and as long as I was in the open and away from the heavy brush, I felt safe from any kind of ambush attack. I had a fun walk and got some pretty neat sunrise shots. Temps are heading towards 115 degrees today so I think I'll take it easy for the rest of the day.
