Getting my typically early start, I headed to First Water TH before sunrise, but before I reached the TH, I came across a Mule walking down the road :o I slowed and went past him and he followed me so I stopped to see if he would approach me but nope, a bit nervous. The Mule didn't have on a halter, saddle or rider and was shod so it wasn't a wandering wild. Last I saw of him, he was heading back towards the trailer parking lot :-k

I hit the trails before 0600 to a sun rising in a cloudless sky and a fairly stiff breeze and went out the Dutchman Trail just past Parker Pass and made my turn around. On my way back I came across a small (2-1/2 ft) Diamond Back rattler sunning itself across the trail so I took a couple pics of it then stepped across it and continued on my way. As I got close to the Second Water Trail turnoff, here comes the Mule again, he walked towards me then at the last moment he veered around me and kept on going ](*,)

I didn't want to risk spooking him so I didn't try to get my camera and I didn't want to pursue it for fear of driving him deeper into the mountains so I continued on to the TH where I met one of the FS Volunteers. He had tried to approach the Mule but was unsuccessful too. We talked for a few minutes then I left and stopped at the Bluebird and told Louis about the Mule, just in case someone comes looking for it.

Now that's my kind of hike, wildlife (2) trail hikers (0) :y:
