Followed the East Verde down to Whispering Pines then road walked up to Washington Park. I knew I was going to be in the sun all day but temps in the low 80s made it enjoyable. The first 3 miles west of the Hatchery was littered with cattle and their leavings. Upon reaching Ellison Creek a deer sprung up from the grass right next to me, not sure who spooked who. This area is pretty much a sea of knee to chest high ferns. Perley Creek was barely a trickle and muddy but loaded with raspberries. Hells Gate Canyon was the same. By the time I reached Bonita Creek it was nothing short of an oasis. Ample shade, raspberries galore and lots of cold, flowing water enticed me into taking a nutrition break and filtering some water. The trail between Bonita and Dude requires that you pay attention, although a few well-placed cairns can easily guide you back onto the trail. Dry Dude Creek was indeed dry. Just a few pools and a light trickle but the shade along the trail was appreciated and I encountered the biggest raspberry patch of the day. I can't say this is my favorite section of Highline but the tread changed several between sand, loose rock & fern forests. Once at the East Verde I decided to just follow the water, sometimes walking directly in the river. I didn't see anyone else using the trails all day but encountered about a dozen elk and tons of small game and lizards. Overall it was an absolutely beautiful day on the Highline. |
