| no partners | | Took my 4 month old puppy for her first hike. She's a Bullmastiff / German Shepherd mix named Rosie. I figured Horton would be a perfect place and the weather was just as good. We crossed the creek and stayed on the east side for a good while. More shade and less people over there, although I only saw about 6 hikers all day. Moving through brush and hopping over deadfall was a good little challenge for her but she handled it with ease. We took frequent breaks at deeper pools and cascades. I enjoyed a cold beverage while sitting in the creek during the warmest part of the day. Eventually we went totally off trail and met up with Highline Trail, then hiked west to Horton Spring. To my surprise there was nobody around, so we took a 2 hour nap under breeze blown pines and within earshot of the creek. Woke up covered in Pine sap, both of us. From there we started back toward the TH and probably made 3 more stops along the way, one was for a quick dip into a nice pool. It was a nice long day but very enjoyable overall. I was thoroughly impressed with how well the pup handled herself and glad she loves water and can swim well. Seems like we had the place to ourselves today. |
