| no partners | | Just wanted to get out and stretch my legs. Cool temps and low lying clouds lured me in. Clouds from last night were just departing as new clouds began to move in when I started. The road to the TH was muddy but still passable. The creek down below the trail was flowing pretty good and I could hear it for the first couple of miles. There are a few overgrown spots in the trail, nothing scratchy though. I was hearing distant thunder and stopped at Big Kahuna for a quick breakfast and a check of the radar. It sprinkled briefly as I left Big Kahuna and made it about half way through the sea of manzanita before deciding to turn back. It rained the entire trip back down. Surprisingly, the trail isn't very slippery when it's wet. The only thing that bothered me was the flashes of lightning that I couldn't tell which direction they came from. The rim appeared to be getting the worst of it. As I reached Payson I was greeted by blinding rain and flooded roads. Although I would've liked to continue on for a few more miles, the weather conditions sure made for some great photo ops and temps in the 70s. The humidity was unreal but I'll take it for now. |
