Had to take a trip to Scottsdale so I made the appointment as early as possible, planning to hit the Supes during prime time. I had a shorter and a longer hike planned, depending on the amount of time available - figured that if I finished by 3, then I would make it home by dark (I hate driving in the dark, and avoid it whenever possible) ... well despite getting a later start than planned I was able to do the exact hike I wanted and somehow left the parking lot at 3 on the dot and made it home just at dark ... little victories like that always please me.
When I saw how crowded all the parking areas along the road were, and squeezed into the only open spot in the main lot just after 11am I was thinking that my take-away from this hike would be that the entire Phoenix area had gotten out-of-control crowded since I left five years ago, and that it is pretty much ruined for me now. But - while that is true, and I'm thankful I had my heyday in the Supes 10 and 20 years ago - the fact is that once I was out there, I didn't see all that many more people than I used to years ago ... and it was still wonderful. I do so love those Mountains.
Highlights included the absolutely perfect weather, seeing so much water flowing, finding a hawk's skull, chatting with some nice hikers along the way (shout out to Gary from Kansas! ) and best of all - seeing the first Coati's I have seen in the Superstitions! A whole group of them were just across the creek from me right where the trail descends to the creek for the first time when travelling CCW ... including a small baby. Awesomeness. |
