He had heard we were going to be there (there are no secrets on HAZ) and came by to say "Hi". This is his turf and he keeps a close eye on things. Actually, he was just using us as an excuse to drop by the Bluebird for a burger and beer later in the morning. Kingsnake led us on a slight variation from the official gps route taking a side trip to see an arch. We paused in the shade at Hackberry Spring for a quick lunch and then followed First Water Creek back towards the trailhead. The temperature was pushing 90 by the time we got to the spring. I was starting to get a little overheated on the way back to the TH but my Frogtogs neck cooler saved the day. Overall, this is a fairly easy hike for the Superstitions with very modest elevation gain and nice scenery. Favorites were the view across Garden Valley towards Battleship, the arch, and the cliffs at Hackberry Spring. The off trail portion of the hike up the bottom of First Water Creek was a little hard on the feet due to a few rocky sections. |
