Fish were dimpling the surface as they fed on bugs. This was one of three tanks in the area that had been planted with trout by AZ Game and Fish. Catch and release restrictions purportedly resulted in some large resident trout inhabiting these waters. This motivated me to dust off my old float tube and fly fishing gear which hadn’t been used in 6 years and go back to that pond . Finding a camp site on a rough forest road only a half mile from the pond, I was ready for an early morning fishing expedition. I launched the float tube shortly after sunrise and was soon paddling around with visions of catching monster trout. It was not to be. The fish dimpling the surface turned out to be hundreds of 8-10 inch catfish. These ugly creatures would hang vertically in the water a few inches under the surface waiting for a tiny bug to land, then rise to slurp it down. Not interested in catching catfish, I used a sinking line to work wet fly streamers near the bottom with no luck. So I did what I’ve always done when the trout aren’t cooperating (or existing) and resorted to taking photos of the scenery. I was off the pond by 8:30 am. The next day I would drive to JD Dam Lake and try my luck there. |
