| partners | | With the monsoon in an active pattern, I wanted to do this one early in the day and avoid any potential lightning so we drove up Friday night for a pleasant camp with jonnybackpack and the shed hunter. It rained for a few hours overnight and the morning was overcast and cool. We were on trail at 7. By 8 it started drizzling and lasted an hour or so, adding to the already vibrant greens from the recent rain.
Over the course of the day we spotted 16 or 18 elk in about 5 different encounters, plus two encounters with large and loud mammals that went unseen. I saw a big redtail near Aspen Spring too.
It was surprising how few people were up on the rim. All the big campsites were empty, and we didn't encounter a single hiker on the entire loop. A rarity for sure in summer here. Only twice did we hear the slight drone of a quad driving on an adjacent road, but that's also pretty impressive given the proximity this trail is to so many motor vehicle routes.
The sun came out around 11, but only lasted an hour before clouds began to build. We made it back to the truck before any rain hit, though the rim views revealed a few showers in the area.
While the cabin loop doesn't offer the euphoria of trudging the road that climbs Mt. Ord, it allows you to cover a bunch of miles over diverse landscape in a fairly short amount of time. Somehow this was my first hike on the rim since snow season, and it was nice to be back! |
