I first hiked into Hog Canyon over 15 years ago. I went in without knowing anything about it. I had no gps, no cell phone, very little water and unrealistic expectations. I was going to get up to the ridgeline. I ended up cliffing out in several places and almost falling to my certain death or sustaining serious injuries at the very least. I hiked out 8 hours after I had started and limped back to the Broadway Rd lot.

This experience made me respect the Superstitions and realize this place can kill you if you are not prepared to meet the challenges.

Fast Forward to yesterday and I went in for the 4th time and was treated to a magical day. I wanted to go last week, but the snow diverted me to other locations. I knew the water would be flowing this weekend, so I hiked in hoping to see the waterfalls flowing.

The “trail” is the same as it has always been. The wash – boulders, grasses, catclaw, et al. The added bonus was the water that was flowing for most of the way up. I would guess if I came in earlier in the week, I would have gotten pretty wet. There were signs of a pretty heavy flow. All that snow and rain we had has to go somewhere.

The canyon passage area was so beautiful. 100’s of tiny little falls with the canyon walls and cactus. This is why I like this place so much. I could see water still trickling down from all sides. I imagine by next week, barring any new rains, this canyon will revert to the dry wash it usually is.

I could hear the falls as I approached the little bend. When I finally arrived, I could see a strong flow coming off the large falls, and water coming from the pool making even more falls. My plan was to take some long exposure shots of the running water. I spent almost an hour taking pictures and exploring the falls area. I climbed up to see the petroglyphs and the falls up top were flowing very nicely as well.

I looked up at the ridgeline and thought about my near-death encounter years ago. No ridgeline adventures for me this day, but I am sure that one day, I will head up there again and make the loop I wanted to years ago.
