Add a little rain and this place comes to life. I opted for Hog Canyon after the nice soaking we got on Saturday. I wanted to avoid the circus at Massacre Falls. There were a couple of groups of other hikers in there, so the solitude I used to get from this trail has diminished. The boulder hopping requirements, route finding and general difficulty of this hike will always serve as a filter for this place, but I hope this does not become the next “big thing” and becomes overrun.

There was no water at the start near the boundary gate. That quickly changed as the creek started to fill out. The further we went up, the more water there was. There were tons of other falls flowing off in the distance up on the cliffs as well. By the time we reached the “turn off” for the falls, there was no doubt they would be flowing strong. The first glimpse from the little ridge that takes you the falls confirmed that.

I have not seen this much water flowing at these falls before. It was gushing. Lots of people up there, but it was still nice to visit.

The water made the hopping a little more challenging, that is, until I stepped in and got my boots wet. Then, walking down the creek got much easier. No need to avoid getting wet when you are already soaked (my feet at least). The usual payment for visiting this cool canyon – cat claw mauling, was also in effect. I have learned lessons from past encounter and had on long pants and long sleeves, but my hands still managed to get shredded by the “guardians of the canyon”.

I hiked up with some friends and their kids. I met up with some other hikers that knew me from a Facebook group. The highlight of the hike, besides all the water, was finally meeting Kathleen Brooks and her wonderful dogs – all 4 of them.

So, a great day in the Supes. A nice visit to Hog Canyon. My only concern is the herd mentality of social media. I regret posting pictures on some of those groups now. I think I need to scale that back or I will be partly responsible for the Instagramization of this place.
