The quad route provided good quick access, but I thought I would cleverly off trail it to get into the canyon early. Got cliffed out. Did find a curious flat level cleared area with one elk horn shed and hundreds of chert chippings; no sign of any dwelling. Canyon rim then down the break that I believe we were on years ago, recently provided the canyon escape for Hank and Larry. Dropped my pack and went to the now running falls for photos. This is how we found it years ago [ photo ] .
Down the canyon and set up an early camp at the confluence. Read some as the sun was high. Then down the canyon as before for photos; once the granite showed up progress was probably in yards per hour. Crawled, leaped, slid, scrambled, minimal upright walking, bushwacked, finally turned around and got back to camp in late afternoon. Got pretty cold for me that night, glad I brought some winter weight long johns. Morning up and around to the confluence canyons; for me JR was the star of this one, although due to sun angle good photography a problem. Both JR and Indian camp had stellar brush free slick rock with pools and after the previous afternoon very welcome. I packed up my camp and back the way I came; I must say going up the little break was a little challenge with a back pack. Walked up the canyon to the trail like I should have the first time. Steep walk back to the vehicle and warm, but nice and this trip I saw no one.
I really like this area, and can see a return at some point. |
