| partners | | Although I had spotty cell service at the gate on FR 406W, Tracey had not had service since midday yesterday on Whiterock Mesa so I had no idea where we would meet up on Forest Road 406W.
It depended on any number of things... how early they got up, ate breakfast, packed up and hit the trail, and of course how early I got going from Doll Baby TH. (I had car camped along the Verde within a half-mile of Doll Baby) Yesterday Tracey texted me they had a VERY LATE 9 am start so based on their anticipated last night campsite (which Tracey & I had scouted out last month) I had a feeling I would have a long hike before meeting up.
Not that interested in hiking that far along the road (and of course the return trip) I took my time getting started and set off hiking at a leisurely pace. Even then I was quite surprised to meet them just a short distance past the gate. Cool! No long road-walk today, for me anyway.
(It turned out Tracey had become the camp taskmaster and had everyone awake by 5 am so they would be on the road hours earlier than yesterday.)
Just off the road near the gate they all dropped their packs and we set off on the short jaunt to the ruins. We made a quick pass through the site then on to the grind holes and the 'granary' cave before making the quick trip back down.
Although I would be retracing this part of the road-walk the 4th time in two days and usually by this point I'm so done with road-walking it becomes a drag, this time I had company so it was more like a breeze. |
