| partners | | Between rough road and all the photo-tourists we chose Needle Vista instead of First Water. With only one car in the lot we chose well.
We began along the well-defined trail but in a constant search for the best photo-op viewpoint we soon left the trail and followed a route leading from one high-point to another, and another, eventually dropping onto the drainage/horse trail from Horse Staging to First Water Creek.
After crossing the creek decided on doing the loop counter-clockwise. We took the out-and-back side-trip to the mine. I had a flashlight this trip but Tracey wasn't having any of going into the mine so we just turned around and headed back, stopping for our lunch break along the way.
A few precarious creek crossings but neither of us got wet so no worries there. For the return leg we climbed westward up the horse trail, took a right at the fence and pretty much followed the trail all the way back to Needle Vista.
Somebody has been installing fresh Hackberry Spring Trail signs all willy-nilly... and they make no sense at all. We passed three separate intersections, each sporting signs showing the trail coming from our left and turning toward us, heading east.
#1. If we turned left at the first sign, we would never reach #2.
#2. If we continued past #1 and turned at #2, we would never reach #3.
#3. Only if we continued past #1 & #2 would we reach the third "Hackberry Spring Trail" intersection.
So which is correct? #1, #2 or #3? Or NONE of them?
Now we had our own route and we don't need no signs, but for folks not sure of where they are going... well I guess that's what provides job security for the S&R folks. |
