#1. Tracey needed miles and elevation gain as prep for a 3-day AZT backpack
#2. After a 10-day layoff I needed to ease back into hiking without aggravating the lower back issues
First off, Tracey was thinking Slate Creek to Mt Ord but I knew that was out for me, and she didn't want to hike alone... you know, there may be bears about and she still has a bit of PTSD from our black bear encounter last year.
Here's a thought... how about we drive a mile or so up to a 'saddle' on Forest Road 626 and Tracey does an up-and-back hike on FR 626 while I do some wandering out-and-back on 5098 ridge? Yup, I think that'll work.
And how well did it work?
#1. Tracey ends up with an 8-mile/2400' AEG up-and-back hike along the road
#2. I VERY quickly got bored of the ridge wandering so I thought I'd check out Forest Road 3686, figuring it won't be too rough on me, I'll just walk down a little ways...
Yeah right... as usual, the farther down I went the more interesting things got, so I ended up doing almost the exact opposite as Tracey, a down-and-up as opposed to her up-and-down albeit with almost exactly half her stats.
I ended up eating lunch underneath a bridge over AZ 87, where I found a fenced path for game to cross under the highway headed toward Iron Dike.
It turned out to be a reasonable workout for both us on a perfect day for hiking. Tracey even had the opportunity to meet the couple who owns the green-roof cabin 500' north of FR 626 opposite of where FR 1688 heads south toward Little Ord. |
