War's have been fought over which is "better" but I won't belabor that here. The two machines do different things. The dozer cuts a bench quickly but leaves more finish work to do. A mini-ex does the benching and can do a lot of the finish work, but it's slower. When all is done, both make trail quicker than hand tools alone. I worked behind it finishing the trail, and in front cutting limbs and trees. The machine goes faster than me, so it was a challenge.
This work is happening on an approximately 2.5-mile long section near Gonzales Tank, up the horrible FR93 off Lake Mary Road. Both ends of the section join the existing AZT route, so when it's done it can be opened. ACE had a hand crew on the segment two weeks ago and they got a bunch of it done; now the machine has roughed in what they didn't complete, which they will make quick work of when they return at the end of May. Then all that will remain is installation of a super gate and the section can be opened, probably just after the last 2019 north-bound through hiker passes this way
The night of cowboy camping was lovely. A heavy-duty cot and big comfy car-camping sleeping bag made for a very comfortable night under the almost-full moon. |
