| no partners | | The northern contingent of the Arizona Trail Association Usual Suspects ventured out for a look-see at Cottonwood Canyon and some sign installations.
Three of us walked in a couple miles trail-north of FR83 to see what the post-fire flooding, and recent youth crews in the area, had done. The flooding really did a number on the narrow confines of the canyon, rolling the rocks around and cutting the banks. BUT the work done by youth crews last year and recently held up very well. The crews moved much of the trail out of the creek bottom onto the side slopes (where there is some) and built some amazing rock structures at the creek crossings. Our crew cut some thick brush to extend the effort a few hundred feet.
Task B was to replace the burned Wilderness sign and a trail sign at Two Bar TH, which the adventuresome guys did, I’ve sworn off being involved with that road and a vehicle. We then made our way to Campaign TH to replace the falling-apart Wilderness sign. That got to be quite the adventure, as the area received two inches of rain Monday. It was sketchy in places but we felt reasonably safe following fresh dozer tracks down the flowing washes and along the steep roads. Then we met the dozer. More sketchy road ahead with some wash crossings that exercised the circular muscles, but we finally made it to Campaign TH. The broken-down sign was a few hundred yards ahead.
After all that, someone had beat us to the punch, the sign was all put back together and expertly rebuilt, sure to last at least a few more years. We’ll find another place for the new one.
More fun and adventure on the Arizona Trail. |
