Last February a band of AZT volunteers disassembled four shade ramadas in an unused campground at Roosevelt Lake for use elsewhere along the Trail. They were installed when the dam was raised in the 1990s and disprove the adage “If you build it they will come.” So the FS put them up as excess property available for use by other public entities. The Arizona Trail Association latched on to four, two for use at the Pine TH and two for a new trailhead in the works near Sahuarita Road south of Tucson.

Many of the same volunteers completed the re-installation this week. Several weeks ago they dug and poured the concrete footings at the Pine TH. The ramada parts were stored at the Payson Ranger District complex where last week volunteers prepared them—stripping old paint and primer painting them. This week the final coat of FS Brown was sprayed on. Then it took several careful trips to move them to the Pine TH without too many paint dings. The grand finale was Monday with reassembly, just before winter weather.

The ramadas are part of extensive remodeling of the Pine TH. A local trails group is improving and upgrading the trailhead with a 0.4-mile hard-surface trail around the property, a fire ecology demonstration program and rehabilitation of areas damaged by vehicle and camper use.

Many thanks to the band of usual suspects who continue to improve the trail!
