This project supports the Rim Country Trails Initiative, a FS-led push to enhance trails in Rim Country. While the larger effort has bogged down a bit, some projects do not require extensive analysis and can proceed. Clearing the Gen. Crook trail highlights an intriguing bit of AZ history on the Cabin Loop, which connects with the AZT at General Springs TH.
The group followed the chevrons-placed in the 1970s by Boy Scouts-and found a couple of the slant-top mile-marker posts. We were a little suspect as to their provenance because one looked suspiciously like it had been made with a power router. The trail was surprisingly easy to follow in this area with wheel rut depressions often quite visible. Some spots have grown up to dog-hair pine stands, and we cleared a path through them.
Since we were all there, we replaced the leaky sign-in register box and message signpost at General Springs TH.
Thanks to the Mogollon Rim Ranger District and the PSFR group for the strong support! |
