| partners | | We spent three days building new trail on the south end of the AZT Happy Jack Single Track project. A great night around the campfire Friday, then meeting a bunch of volunteers Saturday morning followed by a walk out to the project and some dirt-slinging. Sunday we got an earlier start and the crew completed and opened a short section. Three hikers happened by as we were about done so they got the honors of "breaking" trail, as one called it. Not so sure she can claim "breaking" without some pick and McLeod work, but so be it.
ATA provides meals on these events and we had some great food for the duration; my favorite was the Fry Bread Taco dinner Sunday night.
Rain delayed the start today, but after some rain/snow/hail/sleet episodes earlier on, crew boss Wendy said "we're going," so off we went--I've done stupider things. Rain threatened a few times but things soon cleared and we got a good day in, making it across the canyon and road, up the other side and began contouring along. Progress depends largely on the soil conditions, rock is slower than dirt, obviously. "Trails are built by the foot and walked by the mile." a phrase that went through my mind many times. Today ended at a rock pile.
More fun, if exhausting, times on the AZT! |
