| partners | | Since we decided to head home a day early and still had half the day to go after an early Tule Canyon hike, what better way to cap off the day but knocking out a peak I've thought about for almost ten years but never got-around-to-it.
It was an eerie feeling to be at this huge recreation site with almost nobody else around. Since this was completely unplanned our first task was to figure out:
#1 Is there a designated trail to the summit?
#2 If so, where does it begin?
We found a 'trail' but within a few hundred feet it appeared just go to the shoreline. Tracey had seen some vehicle tracks going through a filed of fox-tails but heading toward the hill, so we decided to try that. But when that petered out without locating an actual trail, it was climb-where-you-will.
Tracey was none to enthused at this point because unlike where the vehicle had flattened the fox-tails, up here they were standing tall and threatening anyone with low hiking shoes... like Tracey's Merrells. And when the buckhorn cholla closed in that's when she said enough! and it was time for me to set a waypoint then make a quick dash to the summit. Funny enough, on the way to the summit I would pass through an area of a few hundred yards long in which I never had to set foot on anything but flat rock... no fox-tails, no sharp cacti, which made the quick dash even faster.
After the usual panorama photos and video I noticed the thousands of tiny fossils embedded in the rocks on Windy Hill. Interesting, but not enough to delay my return.
So that's one down of the three peaks in the Windy Hill Quadrangle. |
