We began from the FR7626/FR1688 intersection and immediately headed up the slope, with the intent of following the route of a very ancient old road. While it is no longer shown on FS maps, it is shown on the 60+ year-old basemap on my GPS.
Unfortunately, we found no trace of the road until reaching the ridge, when it appeared and faded out within a hundred yards. I suppose it's possible we may have found more if we followed the route along the contour but our chosen route was along the center of the ridge. Soon after we encountered a near-new tree stand about 15' tall, well-secured to a pine tree. Tracey proceeded to climb it to check out the view... but by the looks of her death-grip on the rail, I'm not so sure she had a chance for even a quick look before hustling back down.
From there we continued our rambling along the ridge, eventually reaching the gate. From there we headed down, roughly following the remnants of an old trail... a trail I have so far been unable to find any information about the trail.
Once we reached FR1688 we followed the road for most of the way back.
Another enjoyable hike in the cooler air. |
