We started at Coon Bluff/Bush intersection, crossed Bush, headed southeast along random wild horse trails, crossing Scorpion Alley Trail, continuing on until reaching Scorpion Trail when we took it back to Bush. Crossed Bush Highway and wandered toward the Salt River, saw a mare and a very young colt as well as a stallion acting very aggressive to the mother. Speaking with a Salt River Wild Horse Mgmt gal the next day she said the colt was probably 2 weeks old and the mare was in heat. I guess that explains that.
Again it was sad to see just how bare the ground was with the dry grass nibbled to the ground. It hadn't warmed up too much but we cut the hike short when a smoky haze from the Woodbury Fire rolled in, brought in by an east wind.
Weird because although it didn't smell like smoke, it didn't take long before my throat felt raw and I had the beginning of a headache. |
