Tracey sought 'elevation' but not necessarily AEG, and we didn't want to blow the whole day on a trip to the Rim, so this fit the bill just fine.
The drive to the FR626/27 intersection was a breeze and we left the 'Runner a hundred yards out on 27. From there we hiked FR 626 all the way to the summit. We took a side-trip on the return to have a short early 'lunch' at the high-point just north of the campsites.
It was a very pleasant, almost soundless hike, none of the planes we usually seem to hear.
Note: I said almost soundless as we were greeted by cicadas a few times on the return trip.
(Thankfully only a few times)
No wildlife, just a total of six runners... three from Slate Creek, and three from AZ87/FR626 at the Peeley/Ord exit.
The drive back home was peaceful as well, quite the opposite of the unending traffic heading north.
I can't say was that big a surprise, but we saw a full dozen northbound vehicles broken down for various reasons, including flat tires, overheating (steam rising from under hood) to a u-joint/driveshaft issue on an ancient-looking Jeep Cherokee. |
