| My first time out this close to Bartlett in 19.5 years. Wow, been missing out on some nice terrain.
Luckily there was plenty of shoulder parking room for a small army. Pam's New Years resolution is apparently go big or go home. Turnout was good then Prince and The Revolution, I mean Terry and his entourage pulled up.
Naturally we all hiked exactly a tenth of a mile apart except for photo ops. There is a majestic saguaro heading up the first or second hill. Based on Pam's advice I took a rarely used trekking pole. It proved to be a valuable asset on a couple steep grades as a third point of contact. Which was a tad concerning thinking about the return. Cholla was abundant. Per usual, if you respect the cholla then the cholla respects you.
Wind was a tad vicious. Almost put my goggles on but didn't want the cool kids to think I was some kind of freak. No clue why Cathy hangs out with Greg's driftwood personality but man is he fast! Kinna embarrassing, I was the last one to the peak.
Pam's New Year's Peak festivities went smooth despite James and Olivia snubbing us this year. There was chat of a sub group taking a loop return. Which would've been cool but I made a promise to be home early and I can't just "drive" by Squaw.
Heading down was much easier than anticipated. Thanks to last week's saturated ground, it was more of a pillow walk vs a slidefest as anticipated.
With a half mile to go I took my first and only sip of water to flush out the champaign from earlier.
While I lack bubbly charisma, it was great to see everyone! Sorry, didn't really get to meet Wendy/Lisa/TheRevolution but looked like they had fun. The hike, terrain and views were much better than anticipated. I look forward returning to this neck of the Tonto woods a little more often. |
