Our first group hike with HAZ since joining. As a bonus it was in our neck of the woods so the drive time was minimal. Some folks drove long distances and that shows what an active membership HAZ has. Or perhaps it was the lure of free Champagne, homemade cookies, and chocolate covered strawberries :-k . I'm not going to judge even though this group had some very enthusiastic semi-pro drinkers. :D

The climb up was...up. All off trail in soft ground after the recent rains. The softness was a blessing on the return or it would surely would have been a slip fest. There were a couple of cholla in the leg incidents, one being me. First time I was really glad I brought my Leatherman tool. On another occasion I flicked one off my shoe with a perfect chip shot golf stroke with my trekking pole. It flew gracefully through the air and landed smack dab on Cathy's thigh. Couldn't have done it better if I'd tried. Joe, @joebartels commented in his triplog that he was the last one to summit. While technically true, it was only because he got behind me for the final 200 feet of gain to encourage me with an electric cattle prod. NOTE: Organizer Pam had a statute that the party doesn't begin until the last hiker is up. I guess Joe took it upon himself to see that the wait time on me was kept to a minimum. Thanks for the company near the top Joe! :) . NOTE 2: From the looks of some of the folks that summited first, I don't think they actually wait on anyone.

The views were fantastic in all directions as everyone's photosets will attest. It was great to meet so many folks whose trip logs we've been reading and enjoying over the past year. Thanks to Pam, @outdoor_lover for organizing the event and providing some great eats and drinks at the top! We joined Pam, Tom, @Daytripper, and Angela, @tibber on a different route down making it a kind of reverse lasso loop instead of an out-n-back. Saw a fantastic old saguaro on this route. [ photo ] We had lunch with Ray, Pam, and Angela in Cave Creek on the way home. Good times!
