| no partners | | My first visit to Deadman Canyon! We started at 9am. The water was flowing strong in Barnhardt Creek. There were numerous tiny falls going down the side of the Canyon and the trail was fairly muddy. We stopped at Big Kahuna Falls for a while, ran into some friends who were returning from Deadman, and also admired the views along the Mazatzal Divide.
The tributary toward Deadman Creek was flowing well and full of brambles and agave. We stopped a lot for pics and videos of all the little cascades. It took a while to make our way through all the thorns down to the north fork, which was stunningly beautiful. We spent a lot of time playing on the rocks and taking videos of the cascades / falls. We lost track of time and came within view of the North Fork falls right around sunset. After scrambling up the chute, we figured it was probably too dark to see the falls from above.
The original plan was to return via the Rock Springs and Half Moon trails, but at this point it was better to return the way we came since we couldn't see much anyway. The Sandy Saddle Trail looked like it would provide a bit of a shortcut, but it was totally overgrown and we eventually decided not to fight through the brush in the dark. We took our time heading back and enjoyed the views of the stars with the sound of the water.
Overall, thoroughly enjoyable. The weather was perfect, the water was flowing well, there were so many more cascades than expected, and the bottom of the canyon was incredibly beautiful. Will return to see the top of Deadman Falls and the Rock Springs / Half Moon trails someday! |
