2nd Hike of the Day. This little Hike has been on my Wish List pretty much since I joined HAZ over 8 years ago. And for some dumb reason, I just never got around to it. I've actually considered making this a New Year's Day Hike, but it's so short with not much AEG, that I didn't think there'd be enough interest. After doing this finally, it's staying in the possible New Year's file for sure. If we get a New Year's where weather could be tough or I'm not 100% like a few years ago when we did Coronado Mesa, this one will definitely come up again for consideration.

After doing Massacre Falls, tibber, Ambika and I got a bite to eat and then said our goodbyes. I felt like I still had some fuel in the tank (especially after just chowing down a Ribeye) and there was still quite a bit of daylight to be had. It was time to check out those views and afternoon seemed like a Prime Time to do so! The drive was beautiful as the highway was lined with blooming Brittlebush, Lupines and what looked to be possibly Penstemon. Deep pink, columnar stalks, reaching much higher than the Lupine. I almost stopped, but there was a lot of Highway Traffic, so I didn't.

I'm not big on Hiking roads, but on this one, you really don't have much choice for the first half. You're also under the mammoth power lines until you lose them at the saddle. But, with the Brittlebush blooming profusely along the Jeep Road, it was much nicer. The Description lists this as Off-Trail, but there is a use trail and it's evident enough for most of this Hike once you catch it at the saddle off the Jeep Road. Once you realize where the Route takes you to get up, it's pretty hard to get off-trail since it'll either be a climb or a bushwack up the slot. On top, the trail continues and you still can"t really get off it too far here either or you'll be on the edge. I tried to stay on it for the most part simply to save the vegetation and little flowers trying their best to succeed.

I got to the end and there were perfect natural benches to lose the pack, have a seat and just chill. And that's exactly what I did. It was the perfect time for be up there. The Golden Hour was just starting and the views were fabulous. Just enjoyed the time. It's not often when I get birds below me and it was fun trying to catch a pair of neighborhood Turkey Vultures with the camera. They were mostly at eye level or below and I don't get an overhead chance that often at birds like these. There were some flowers that caught my eye, and some Kayakers down below, paddling through the channel. The light and the cliffs reflecting light into the water was pretty sweet.

After chilling for awhile, I decided it was time to go. I wanted to do the short descent without a headlamp, since it's unfamiliar. I put the pack on, turned around and took about 20 steps and saw a big bird in my peripheral vision coming around the tip. I glanced at it, thinking it was one of the Turkey Vultures again and surprise! I got one shot with my Landscape Settings. ](*,) :D And then it was heading away from me and out of sight. Took a few more Photos along the Massif top and then headed down. Back at the Escape right at dark.

I'm a complete idiot for waiting this long to do this one. I was in love with it before I ever got off the Jeep Road onto the use trail. This is a new Favorite and it will be a repeat. It's a perfect little hike during the best parts of the day. Top 5 best Effort to Reward Ratios in it's class as far as I'm concerned.

Brittlebush in the greater Goldfields is still not quite there, but very nice along the road. Same with most of the other Wildflowers.
