I was glad Pam chose this as our hike. It is a hike we actually discussed when we did the Massacre Falls hike earlier in 2020. I happened to be staying at the Lost Dutchman State Park the nite before so it worked out perfectly. Pam, besides being the hostess, was the parking attendant so as to make sure everyone had a place to park in a rather limited area.

Everyone was generous in helping to carry up the morning's bounty and we were off, not sure if Owen was already on his way since we didn't see his vehicle.
The road walk is a bit slippery and steep in places. We soon saw Owen's vehicle below us. We continued on our way up the road and waited at the top of the road for a moment checking out the dam below. The old road was blocked here by 6 or so tall and close together rebar, an interesting choice for a road block. From there it was up the steep side of the hill. It really didn't take too long to get toward the top from where some scenery picture taking could commence.

As we wandered along we eventually saw Owen and his grandson Gavin. It was a real treat to see the legend in person and we were lucky to hear some of his great stories. Also impressive that Owen was able to use his cane-like instruments to get up the steep stuff. Arriving at the tip of the Massif I immediately saw the rock HAZ so that was pretty cool. I tried to incorporate it in my picture. And then the partying commenced as Pam and everyone emptied their packs.

Ray is really taking his bartending duties seriously 🍾 and made sure everyone's glass was always full but even more impressive; not a drop got spilled 🥂 from what I saw. Pam graciously made us all a baggie full of treats and seriously, I know this is why I like this hike the most  . This time the strawberries were particularly juicy and sweet and of course, the chocolate made them extra good. The cookies, awh the cookies, could be a meal in and of themselves. Who needs regular food?!

Oh yes, and the views, were stunning. I do think it was a good thing Wally could at least see the Superstitions as I suspect he felt a little out of place with the Goldfields around him😉. Owen regaled us with a few good stories too. Honestly I don't know where the time goes except it goes too fast when we're all together on top of a beautiful peak with views for miles. We had a nice toast and the group photo which is always fun for Pam to orchestrate with Larry's guidance as the photographer.

Everyone slowly said their goodbyes and we headed over the top and down the hill to the road with an occasional stop for pictures and of course my movie taking. Owen had made good time as I saw him just below me as I hit the road. Another wonderful New Year's Day and a great way to kick off the year we've all been waiting to start🎉.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
