HAZ's lead GE voyeur Eric (@ssk44) told me about an interesting looking ruin he spotted NE of Globe. It's near a neat butte-top ruin he and Hank and visited two years ago [ Corral Ruins ] they called Corral Ruins. Eric also told me there was another nearby butte they'd been curious about that we could probably include. All together it wouldn't be too much walking so my wife Catherine and I figured maybe we could see all three.

The ruin above Winters Ranch was a short walk off the dirt road. The satellite view shows it to be big (I'd guess 50+ rooms) and indeed it is. Not that much to see though - collapsed of course but there wasn't much to find. I didn't see more than 5 or 6 pottery pieces, maybe archaeologists did a complete surface collection. From this nice open hilltop though the nearby buttes we wanted to visit next were easy to see. Either these guys were neighbors or the hill and butte sites represented a shift from secure to insecure living conditions for a single group.

We did the short drive around to the Corral Ruin starting point and used the Eric/Hank gps route. (BTW it wouldn't be hard to walk directly between these sites, but car logistics would be harder.) Nice (mainly) ridge walk in open country with a scramble at the end to gain the top. Lots of collapsed rooms on top indicating habitation. Again not too much pottery - didn't see anything very interesting (though Eric and Hank found a couple pieces based on their pictures).

We then continued on to the "mystery butte" (4805). Catherine stayed in the lead and found a steep break on the left side that led to the top. She spotted a fox on top, then saw it again (after it had gone over the side) or saw a second. I can only attest to seeing (separately) two bushy tails bouncing through the underbrush. Unfortunately no cultural treasures on top - just a minor rock arrangement that was not natural. Anyway a mystery no more.
