| no partners | | Another "get out of the house and go north" day. I drove to the Strawberry Crater trailhead and then north along the powerline road a little ways. I wanted to look at a section of the Strawberry lava flow just to see what it was like. Rocky compared to the surrounding cinder areas but no problem finding smooth channels between the rock piles. The flow must be much older than the nearby one at Sunset Crater...so I'll believe the Wikipedia entry saying 50-100,000 years over the one saying 2000 years.
My curiosity satisfied, and no cultural signs on top, I dropped back to the lower cinder plain and after a while started finding pottery pieces and a ruin. Continuing along I found another. Pretty much standard fare for the area but it's always fun to walk around and find stuff.
I had pondered walking up Strawberry Crater when I was done but after struggling up the loose cinders just to get back to my car I decided to leave that for another day. |
