Route Scout Route Recorded  on Route Scout Popup | MapDEX
Parked at the Derrick Trailhead (which was a mess of people camping in the parking lot, and doing their morning business sitting on a bucket in plain sight, my kids could not stop laughing), and walked up the road to the start of Horton to get the busiest portion of the hike out of the way first. As usual, Horton was in good condition and easy to follow, although we chose to stay next to the creek for some long stretches. Prettier that way, and less people.

At the spring, the kids took a short break to eat some pizza, then we headed south on Highline. Trail is in mostly good shape, and we only saw three other hikers. Maples looked great, and the kids thought coming back in the fall would be a good idea. Their list of fall hikes is getting longer every week.

Once we reached Derrick, it was getting pretty warm, and the clouds in the forecast were nowhere near us, but at least we were going downhill. The rocky sections were mildly annoying, and I think that contributed to a few moments of crankiness from the kids. Once we got closer to the trailhead, the rocks lessened and attitudes improved. Good loop for the kids, and they had fun. Of course, clouds started moving in as soon as we finished. The trailheads and road were a mob scene, although the parking lot campers were gone. Heavy traffic getting back into and through Payson.

Oddly enough, it was raining at my house when we left this morning, and it was raining again when we got back home late this afternoon.
