| no partners | | This trail was burned over by the Shultz Fire 10 years ago. I've heard a number of people say they no longer ride or hike it. But I thought it was great! There are really good views from the burn area, plus there is still a lot of forest: the usual succession from pines, to firs and aspens. The fire areas are growing back, which is interesting to see.
It's not a ride I'd want to do on a warm afternoon, or on a windy day, however, because that mountainside is pretty exposed, both to heat and wind. I started about 7:30 a.m., and if I do it again next week, I'll start even earlier. I am living a short distance away this summer, so it's convenient.
I rode from near Shultz Pass Road to the green buildings by the spring above Locket Meadow. Next time I plan on going further.
I like the steady but doable (for me) workout, from 8000 feet to almost 9500, and then the easy coasting back down. I don't do any very "technical" mountain biking these days, so this was just about right for me. The regular gradient kept me pedaling, without being too onerous, and on the way back it wasn't too scary going down hill. You just have to watch carefully for the soft spots. There are lots of those. |
