| no partners | | I listed this trip as a scenic drive but it was anything but scenic.  We drove up Highway 87 to see in person for the first time the extent of the damage caused by the Bush Fire. We weren't prepared for the scope...mile after mile totally blackened. It appeared quite a bit of it burned very hot too. The loss of that many saguaros is somber and heartbreaking. We turned around in Payson so we didn't see the 188 (eastern side) of the burn.
It appears that they kept 99.9% of it east of 87 which has been already reported here but it was nice to see so much of the Mazzies unscathed. Mt. Ord looked really bad, but has a green cap on it at least. Rain will cause a real problem with runoff. We saw an impressive display of manpower with trucks and trailers clearing debris and vegetation from the west side of the culverts and washes all along northern 87. Let's hope that is enough to keep the debris slides from cresting over the highway.
No photos as things are currently depressing enough for everyone these days I'm guessing. Only one photo in the photoset, which is of the highlight of the trip...a box of Bosa Donuts from Payson. 
I'm calling on all HAZ members to wash and detail their cars and trucks today so that we might get some much needed rain here in the valley. :-) |
