| no partners | | Mrs. SloFolks is on a hiatus from hiking, so since I was alone I kept this one close to home. Nice little lasso loop starting at the P.A. Seitts trailhead using the Military, Flat Rock, Quartz, Go John, Jasper, and Slate Trails. Route shown in photoset. So nice to have cool temps at the start and throughout the hike.
Near the head of Go John Canyon I heard the sound of rattling antlers and 5 seconds later two mule deer bucks bound across the trail about 20 yards in front of me and continued to head butt and clank their antlers together. [ photo ] This is too early for the rut so I think these two were probably young buck siblings just practicing their machismo for next spring. They would stop and nibble then fight a little then stop and nibble. This went on until they finally smelled or saw me and then they took off like the wind.
Saw a few bikers and once on the Go John and Slate I had a "Dear Diary" moment...I actually passed other hikers.
This doesn't happen much and hasn't in some time, (I refer you to my HAZ name). I became very confused and disoriented at this prospect. For those of you that have hiked with me I swear this is the truth. The different groups I passed weren't even disabled or anything. The creek was dry on both crossings. I sure hope we get some rain tonight as projected. |
