Frosty morning after the second of three nights of freezing temps. Up Ash Creek with the pitter-patter of leaves falling for the weight of the frost. Some deep reds and a good mix of colors before the trail turns west and climbs up the canyon. Relative to potential it wasn't all that, but there was still enough to feel the magic.
On Bassett Peak Trail some snow on the shady north side of the peak. Pinalenos and Mount Lemmon were topped with snow. Air was pretty clear from the summit, a little hazy west.
Heading down only saw one pair of hikers. Canyon froze back over the night of this trip. At the very least it's dropped plenty of leaves and shortened the window for autumn color. It was worth the drive on this day, but at this point I'd hesitate to recommend going from Phoenix at least without tempered expectations. |

Autumn Foliage Observation Substantial Gone higher up apart from by Upper Ash Spring. Aspens just yellowing. Good maple show lower down. Three consecutive frozen nights will close the window early. |
