I followed a route toward the TH that @Jim_H posted, although I drove slightly farther on the road than he did. The road was good to drive on -- I think that a high clearance 2WD vehicle could have made it to where I parked. There was a bit of overgrown vegetation on the road, so I stopped a few times and got my loppers out to trim some branches. I got tired of trimming the bushes, so I decided to park about 2.3 miles from the trailhead; so I turned a 4 mile hike into an 8.6 mile hike. The road walk was easy so I didn't really mind the extra mileage.
I used a GPS track that @LindaAnn posted when she and Kelly did the hike, and it turned out to be a very good track and I followed it to a "T", especially on the climb up past the summit block. The climb up to the top was a lot of fun, unfortunately I can't say the same about the trek to get up to the summit block -- I can't recall hiking through so much bowling ball sized lava rock. It was really slow going, and every step was an accident waiting to happen...but I made it up and down. It was nice up on the summit, the teddy bear cholla notwithstanding.
It was nice to bag this peak -- this was the 35th(out of 73) P2K peak for me in Arizona. |
