| no partners | | | Headed out to the Superstitions yesterday to hike the Hoolie Bacon Trail. I've hiked part of this trail last year but turned around due to the snowy conditions last Feb. The road to Tortilla Well is horrible as always and getting worse, high clearance 4wd is mandatory. Started up the JF trail then turned on Hoolie Bacon at the trail junction. Like nearly all Superstition hikes post fire the catclaw is hell and coming back in groves, good thing I wore long pants. Stopped to check out the old trough in Cedar Basin then headed up Horse Ridge. Even though it's only a 700 foot elevation gain it is steep and full of loose rocks, makes you work a lot harder for it. Took a quick break up on the ridge then headed down into Horse Camp Basin and checked out the old corral, which was partially burnt. Continued on past the back side of Trap Canyon and the start of Upper LaBarge (both are on my list). Then made the long climb back out. Not a drop of water in Tortilla Creek anywhere, everything is so dry. There was a Jeep at Tortilla Well and a couple cars in the lower parking lot but I did not see anyone all day. Most of this area took the fire pretty hard, especially down at the Trap Canyon area, 95% of the big trees that were there are gone. Checked off another Superstition hike off my list. |
