Last day off from my vaca, so decided to head out to the Eastern Supes to check out Tony's Backyard. Told myself last year I would never drive the 342 again and here I was. Still the same crap as it was earlier last year. Tony's Backyard starts where the southern section of Haunted Canyon begins. Parked off the side of 342 and down I went. The first mile and a half of this so called trail is a bushwhack through Manzanita, Holly and Cat Claw up the side of a ridge, bypassing the creek. The final 2 miles are boulder hopping at the bottom of Haunted Canyon. The canyon gets tighter and the boulders get bigger the further you go. About a mile from Tony Ranch I lost focus for a half of a second and took a pretty good fall while going over a couple boulders. Smashed my leg up pretty good. Spent some time trying to clean it up and decided that was my sign to stop and turn around. While I didn't completely make it to the cabin, I did get to check out a good portion of lower Haunted Canyon section. Minus the boulders it's beautiful with huge Cypress trees filling up the canyon, there huge leaves covered the canyon floor. Bear scat was EVERYWHERE and at one point there something that was a pretty good size moving through the brush. I couldn't see it but it was making a ton of noise coming through the brush. I was waiting to see a bear pop out, but it didn't. Just another adventure in the Superstitions.
