Few cars at the First Water parking which is expected for a weekday. The first 4.5 miles are on the Dutchman Trail going up and over Parker Pass. First mile of the Dutchman is a sad sight as the Superstition Fire destroyed everything in the area; after the first mile things improved a ton. Got to the Bull Pass Intersection, had a quick snack and then started the climb up. The climb up Bull Pass is not to horrible but once you get to the top of that the real fun starts with a steep slippery climb up to the top of Black Top Mesa. Made it to the top, explored the area for a bit, found the Spanish petroglyphs and had lunch. The views on top are absolutely amazing with several Superstition landmarks visible. You can also clearly see the fire line from this summer's fire. Spent about 30 minutes on top (all to myself) and headed down. Not sure what was worse going up or coming back down. Your knees take a beating going down. Ran into a couple of groups with no one past the Black Mesa junction. |
