Figured I could easily couple a few posted routes together but got lucky and found a couple really similar routes posted by @LindaAnn. Made a few simple route modifications, loaded it up in RS, and we were off.
Got started right before sunset. Three nice climbs on the route, the first being Bursera Canyon, a favorite of mine. Nice warmup, got the blood pumping and the ligaments stretched. Then it was a beautiful desert hike over to the start of Alta, enjoying the wildflower show with the coyotes howling in the distance.
Second climb up Alta to the target of Maricopa Peak. This was the first time hiking Alta in this direction, which I really enjoyed. The ascent in this direction has a nice hiker grade, easy to keep a good stride going. Quick visit to the peak and then continued across Alta and then down. Stopped in a wash to refuel.
Picked up the Bajada Trail and took it over to Ranger, the third climb of the hike. Made it to the National junction in no time and cruised across and then down the Eliminator, around the bend, and back into the TH just as the day was warming up.
If your looking for a longer South Mountain hike with some AEG this is a fantastic option you should consider. We both gave it 5 stars. |
