| no partners | | Needed to stay close to home today, so I opted to do a little more exploring in the Goldfields. I decided to hit up Dome Mountain. Arrived at the the Wolverine Pass entrance to the Bulldog Canyon Road just before sunrise. The parking area was empty. Saw one motorcyclist within the first 100 yards of the hike and then not another soul until a quarter of a mile from the finish, when I was passed by a coupe of 4x4 enthusiasts.
The only downside to this hike is the 2.3 mile road walk before the hiking trail peels off. However, from that point on, the hike is excellent! Loved the diversity in the geology! And when the trail hangs an abrupt left ~0.5 mile from the summit, it takes on a Flatiron-esqe ascent and opens up to panoramic views in all direction.
The route is pretty straightforward and easy to follow, though someone has decided to spray paint some unnecessary arrows along the way.
At the summit, I signed the register and then set my sights on an off-trail trek out to the south point of Dome Mountain. This point is frankly more prominent and is what originally piqued my interest in this hike.
The off trail is a little laborious in parts, and there are sections that with cairned routes, but there is also a fair amount of choose-your-own-adventure as well. The views from the south summit, with sheer drops to the canyon floor were excellent.
Temps were quite moderate for approaching mid-May.
Beyond the views, the saguaro blossoms stole the show today. They are all out in full force in celebration of Mother's Day! |
