| no partners | | I have long wanted to come out to this part of the park and take some astro shots. I saw the triplog from @Yoder and was finally inspired to head out. I have done this hike in the day, for a sunrise and sunset, and now I have done it a night.
The hike up the sandy wash is the same as always. I made my way to the San Tan Trail and turned left towards the cool crested saguaro. I brought two cameras with me. One for Milky Way shots and the other for star trails. I felt like a pack mule carrying two tripods, two cameras, extra lens, water and a chair (which, of course, I did not use).
Once my eyes adjusted to the dark, the ambient light of Phoenix made most things visible. I set up my star trails rig, set the intervalometer and started taking shots. I took my other camera and started looking for interesting shots. There is a good deal of lights off in the distance to the south, it was tricky to avoid those. The worst was the non-stop planes and jets flying overhead. That was hard to overcome with long exposures.
The silence of the desert was really nice. I would hear the occasional rustling in the bushes, but nothing "large", so I figured it was a bunny or a lizard (jackalope, perhaps?). No snakes this time, although I was expecting some. No scorpions or other creepy crawlies either. Just me, the stars and the desert.
I stopped shooting about 1am and started back to the truck. This part of San Tan Park is nice. It's not a busy as the northern sections and it's more scenic too, even at night. I got my pictures, a little exercise, and some quality "ME" time with the solitude and calmness of the desert at night. Mission accomplish! |
