| partners | | Chris asked if I wanted to join him on a hike on the Arnett Canyon segment of the LOST, with a little more exploring. I said sure. This area is really interesting, with the contrast of desert and riparian zones.
We started off from the Picketpost Trailhead and opted to take the trail on the eastside of the lot, not the AZT. I have gone into Arnett Canyon before, but never from this side. I have to say it's a real beautiful area. The trail going through Arnett Canyon is easy to follow and does not present any difficult sections.
We made to to the "turn off" where the LOST segment goes north towards the Perlite Road, but we opted to go down the canyon a little further with the idea of exploring Telegraph Canyon. I have been in there before and found it very nice as well.
We made it around the southern side of Picketpost to road and rather than go back the way we came, it was agreed upon to make our way over to the AZT and complete the loop around the mountain. A little hike up the road and then a well marked and well worn trail over to the AZT. From there it's a straight shot (with some zig-zags, of course) to the trailhead. Chris wanted to get in at least 10 miles so rather than take the AZT back all the way, we took the short bypass trail that goes back into Arnett Canyon. From there, we got back on the LOST and made our way to the trailhead and completed the loop.
The scenery around this mountain is as scenic as the mountain itself. I really enjoyed Arnett Canyon, with the cool cliffs and beautiful trees. The rest of the loop is also very nice with different types of landscapes to enjoy with the ever present and ever changing mountain view.
The weather was actually cool at the start in the shadows and in the Arnett Canyon. It got a little warmer the further we made it around, but nothing too toasty. Thanks for the invite, Chris! An awesome hike for sure. |
