I’ve been wanting to catch a sunrise at the cool crested saguaro out along the San Tan Trail but I overslept on Sunday morning, so I decided I would hike for a sunset rather than a sunrise. I am glad I did. I was treated to spectacular sunset for sure.

There was nobody at the Rock Peak Wash Trailhead when I arrived (gee, I wonder why?). It was a little toasty. The trail is along the wash, so it’s a sloggy sand fest. The sign said the gates close at 8pm, so I decided rather than temp fate, I decided to park along the street instead.

Loaded up, I headed off with my target out along the San Tan Trail. This little connector trail is not much to write home about, but it offers an easy way to access the southern part of the San Tan MRP.

I actually saw a few mountain bikers, but no other hikers. I went out and took my pictures, exploring the little ridges near Rock Peak and then back down near the cool crested saguaro. The clouds were low and the mountains on the western horizon are dominated by the mountains on the western edge of the park. I was not sure if I would get any colors at all. But, wow, once the sun cleared the cloud layer, the colors exploded. First some vibrant oranges and yellows, then some wonderful pink highlights. It only lasted for about 15 minutes, but it was worth all of the sand I dumped out of my boots when I got home for sure.

I really like this part of the park. The mountains and views down there are very nice.
