| partners | | On our second day at Cloudcroft Ginny and I did the last 2.5 miles of the Rim Trail T105. We started this trail about a year and a half ago doing 5 to 6 mile sections in and back. Once this hike was completed we will have done the trail in both directions for a total of 65 miles. Actually there were two sections, this one and one other where we took a different route back rather than the Rim Trail. Once again we started out with the anticipation of rain but it held out until we finished the section. We headed back along the Sacramento River to our start point.
This section of trail like the 5 mile section just to the north is rocky and steep in places as it drops in elevation and passes over small peaks along the ridge. We did this section south to north. Beautiful forest and great views over the Tularosa Basin, although the views weren't that great on this trip because of the humidity and clouds. It started raining just as we got to the north end of the trail. Rather than walk back the way we came we decided to take a route along the Sacramento River that parallels the Sunspot Highway. Quite a scenic walk along this river and even got to pass by Sacramento Falls, which is more like a cascade but worth seeing. The Mosquitoes were terrible along this stretch, especially when the drizzle let up. We got back to the start point just as the rain really started coming down. It felt good to finally finish this trail, now it's on to other trails in the area and there are plenty. |
