Despite the dismal performance of the Steelers on game day, the weekend was a great time. Arrived with my son and my friend on Friday afternoon, and got up early Saturday to hike part of the Ice Age Trail, which seems to be the Wisconsin equivalent of the AZT.
I looked on GoogleMaps where it shows the Ice Age trail had a trailhead right off of a main highway. The trailhead is there, but it's for a system of hiking/biking trails that are adjacent to a landfill for Marathon County. The Mountain Bay Trail also runs through there, which looks like another former railroad that's been converted to biking/running path. We started on some of the system trails, a short section of the Mountain Bay, then back on the system trails until I finally found the Ice Age Trail. After looking at another map, it looks like it might have been rerouted and most of what we hiked used to be the Ice Age Trail.
Once we got on it, we hiked it north for a half mile, just past a trailehead on a dirt road, then headed back, making a loop with the Mountain Bay Trail, which coincides with the Mountain Bay Trail for several miles. the loop went around the landfill, which in one section didn't make for the best scenery. Got in just under 10 miles and called it a day. The color was really fantastic. Weather was warmer than I expected, never needed a sweatshirt. some light rain at the start, then on and off clouds. The mosquitos were pretty vicious at times, which was also unexpected for this late in the year. |
