Fortunately, the Mountain Bay Trail is over 40 miles long and runs within a quarter mile of where we were staying. We got a bit of a later start than usual but were still on the trail just after 9am. The first 2 miles in was still wooded, and had a lot of color in some patches. After that, the trail goes through the town of Shawano and is mostly paved. It goes through neighborhoods mostly, which also have a lot of trees with a lot of fall color in them. It then crosses the Wolf River and goes by a paper mill before coming to a large farming field, which is where we ended our hike as we had reached the 5 mile mark, making our total for the day just over 10 miles. On the way back we saw some wild turkeys next to a corn field that was right behind some houses. Lots of nature even in the developed areas.
This was Dmitri's longest hike he's done, and he was visibly limping by the end and said his ankle was hurting. Two days later the soreness was gone.
On our way back we were getting hungry and stopped by the local Taco Bell to get a quick lunch before finishing the final 2 miles. Afterwards we went back to Lambeau Field and got a private tour from someone who works for the Packers who my coworker is friends with. Glad we got out to see more of the area and fall color before heading back to the desert. |
